This weekend in the box office “Hellboy II” raised the roof in the box office beating out Will Smith’s Hancock with a gross of $35.9 mil opening in 3,204 theaters.
This was definitely a victory for Universal considering that the sequel opened $12 higher than the original “Hellboy”.
“Journey” placed third in the ravishing box office race to regain all funds allocated to production.
“Meet Dave” placed seventh on the ladder with a measly $5.3 mil following suit with Mike Meyers’ “Love Guru”, which took $13.9 mil home. Both films cost about $60 mil to produce.
What do these figures mean in the long run? Well “Hellboy” did well considering it will slowly sink once “Dark Knight” debut’s this weekend. I am expecting Dark Knight to surpass the all time box office high and create post humus Oscar Buzz for my man, the late Heath Ledger. Let’s look towards at least $100 mil for the Batman crew.
“Meet Dave” has no hope for the future because with “Dark Knight” and “Mama Mia” lining up for their close ups it has no chance of bouncing back into the race after its below average start in the box office.
Perhaps Fox can hope for massive overflow of DVD sales??? Personally, I think that Eddie Murphy may have sabotaged his success in the box office by creating bad publicity during the LA premiere and announcing his retirement prematurely. Honestly he should have retired on top with “Shrek” and left the game on a high note. But this is what happens when actors who have hit their peak turn greedy–they come tumbling down the hill of success to the tree stumps and covers of trashy gossip mags as has beens.
Enough about them though… “DARK KNIGHT” IS IN SIGHT!!!!
